Onions are a great addition to any meal, but they can be a real tear-jerker.
When onions are cut, they release sulfenic acid in a gaseous form, this is what makes your eyes sting and water. But don’t let this put you off cooking onions as they have many health benefits, some of the benefits are:
- Protecting from cancer
- Supporting connective tissues and bone
- They act as an anti-inflammatory
- Protect the heart
Here are four tips to avoid the dreaded onion tears:
#1 Put a small fan next to the chopping board, this blows away the sulfenic gas to avoid it getting to your eyes.
#2 Add a small amount of olive oil or lemon juice to both sides of your knife, this allows your knife to cut more easily to avoid breaking down the onions walls- this is what causes the gases to leak.
#3 Wear goggles- yes that’s right, this is the number one trick to avoid any onion gases getting to your eyes, and did you know you can even by specially made onion goggles!
#4 Freeze the onion for 15minutes before cutting. The theory with this one is the cold inhibits the onions’ chemicals to avoid they being released.
